The Mirror: Original Poem

Today began slowly for me, my heart and soul fuelled by despair and regret. I’m sure we all have those days- the days where we feel like we get nothing right, where we simply wallow in our own self-pity.

These are the days where self-care is of the utmost importance.
It is NOT selfish to care for yourself, to make sure that you yourself are okay.

With this in mind, I’d like to share a poem with you, which may be considered a little darker than my usual work.

This poem is called The Mirror (Unknown Reflection)

You stare back at me,
Who are you?
You smile and wave,
Like an old friend.

I blink and you disappear,
Only to appear once more.
Sadder now- and silent,
Like you don’t understand.

Who are you- little elf,
Staring with wide eyes?
I gain muscle and hair,
Yet still you’re there.

You never change,
Not your eyes.
Or the pain behind-
That survives.

You are my truth,
But you’re a lie.
The eraser of joy,
-INSIDE!

You stare back at me,
Who am I?
I frown and wave,
Your nemesis for life!

If you’ve read my poem, then thank you so much. I believe it’s important to recognise who we are as individuals, instead of focusing on who society would like us to be.

Please know that if you or anyone you know are struggling with mental health issues, that there are services where people can access support and potential treatment.

And always remember that if you are suffering, you are not alone.

Thank you for joining me today.
Wishing you much peace and love,
Dax.
